SF BEAT LAB PLAYLIST 2017

This is a collection of the SF Beat Lab class of 2017. Student beats range from Trap to R&B and even some experimental electro-acoustic tape music inspired by musique concrete. The students were inspiring each other to expand their production and musical comfort zones and it really shows in this beautiful playlist of beats. Listen now below!

BOSTON BEAT LAB PLAYLIST 2011

This was our inaugural session at the Community Music Center of Boston, which is now over 100 years old. At CMCB, we met Zack B who is a genius 11 (now 18) year old prodigy pianist and composer. In our workshop he composed City Of Champions, a masterful composition incorporating strings, drums, guitar and bass (all virtual instruments in Reason). As I watched him grow over the year, he really shined and grew. It was an inspiring experience to see our students from all over Boston come out to our first workshop and leave with songs that could reach people.

OAKLAND BEAT LAB PLAYLIST 2015

This is a collection of the OAKLAND BEAT LAB's class of 2015. There were so many talented producers in my class this year. They didn't even know it yet, but I could see their potential from the beginning. We had two killer pianists this year and it really showed in their works. The other students were extraordinary musicians as well, but even with less technical skill on the keys they were able to keep up with the others. check out their compositions here.

BAY AREA MUSIC PROJECT 2018 MIX (BAMP BEATS)

In 2017, we started a new collaboration with Bay Area Music Project (BAMP), an El Sistema inspired after school music education program serving the social, emotional, cultural and academic needs of children. Alameda Music Project, the flagship chapter program operates 5 days per week, providing on-site music instruction and academic support to over 100 children. We adapted our curriculum to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and created some really fun exciting new curriculum, not to mention these amazing songs with original sound design recorded in the yard (basketballs, yells, voices, chairs). Giving music students the ability to truly own their creative potential through composition, improvisation, experimentation and sound design, challenges students in ways that traditional music education doesn’t.

SF BEAT LAB PLAYLIST 2016

This is a collection of the SF Beat Lab class of 2016. This year the students came out with lots of quality beats. We started the first track with a beat boxed recording one of the students contributed. Then we went on to make a shaker out of a water bottle. After we got a solid groove going, we sampled a violin that we recorded inside the class. There were some amazing collaborations and some of it was even used for graduation. Enjoy these beats below!

SF (MISSION) BEAT LAB 2011-2014

This is a collection of student 20 minute student mixes of beats, house, electro, hip-hop, R&B, and film scores. In addition to student created beats, we also made tons of student/teacher collaborations. These years we made a lot of good music. We made so many good friends while creating a wonderful community around beats and music making.

SF BEAT LAB PLAYLIST 2015

This is a collection of 54 tracks from the SF Beat Lab class of 2015. The class of 2015 had a lot of ups and downs: our classroom was taken away for construction but the students prevailed because of their enthusiasm and determination - we created beautiful sounds. We created remixes, video game music and sampled our favorite musicians and shows. A whole new world of music was opened to their ears, eyes and brains. They really achieved something great this year. Listen below!
